Blue Apron Dinnerma Drama

Prepping before the power went
For Christmas one of our daughters gave us a gift coupon for Blue Apron.

Blue Apron is a company that is commoditising gourmet cooking. Sign up and each week (if you opt-in for that week) they will ship you the makings for three meals for two people. You do the prepping, the cooking--and the eating.

For the past couple of years we've hosted "Salt Pond Cinema" a more-or-less weekly get together of seven of us to gab, snack, tipple, and watch a movie. After we signed up for Blue Apron we decided to host a dinnerma--dinner and a movie. Yes, that's a word. It's not made it to the OED yet, but it's in the Urban Dictionary. Yo!

Our Blue Apron care package did not arrive on Friday, as expected, due to bad weather, but it did arrive on Saturday, packed in a box with an insulating insert and two large blocks of Nordic Ice to keep it cold if the weather was warm. Which it was not.

The night of Salt Pond Cinema we prepped the three meals they'd sent, and by early afternoon we were done. And a good thing, too, because at 4:00 PM the power went out. Ya gotta love Maine.

And we do. And we're used to it, and we've got a generator that runs the important parts of the house like the Internet and the furnace. And the lights, and stuff. But the generator isn't big enough to also run the stove or the oven or the dryer. But we had a backup: a hotplate with two burners as a surrogate stove, and a propane grill as a surrogate oven.

There were 7500 customers without power, according to Emera, our regional electron supplier (see link below.) Their web site said our power would be back at 6:00. They were off by only a little, probably because they had to put people back on line a group at a time to avoid massive surges. By 6:10 our generator stopped and we were back on the grid. Yay!

The dinner such was a great success, and that we've decided to repeat the experience, only next time we'll have the whole gang chopping and cooking and not just us.
